Sam Smith breaks silence on their non-binary journey: “I’ve always felt gender non-conforming”

Sam Smith has opened up about their non-binary journey and their style evolution.

Back in 2019, the Unholy singer came out as non-binary and genderqueer during an interview with Jameela Jamil.

“I’ve always had a little bit of a war going within my body and my mind. I do think like a woman sometimes, in my head. Sometimes I’ve questioned, ‘Do I want a sex change?’ and it’s something I still think about, like: ‘Do I want to?’” they said.

“But I don’t think it is. When I saw the words’ non-binary’ and ‘genderqueer’ and I read into it, and I heard this person speaking, I was like ‘Fuck, that’s me.’”

Since that fateful day, Smith has remained an open book regarding their gender identity journey.

In a recent interview with GQ UK, the 30-year-old revealed that they always identified as non-binary prior to their coming out announcement.

“I think the people that have been with me romantically have always known too. If anything, they’ve helped direct me to it. I’ve only had three boyfriends,” they explained.

“All of them, equally, were incredible teachers. And I think that now, it’s definitely changed how I am in relationships because I don’t need another person to direct me to me.

“I direct them to me myself. Because I know who I am. It’s beautiful. Every single relationship is different. Every two people are different. And I think it’s just learning your own language together.”

Smith also opened up about their fashion evolution and trying out “masc dressing” at the start of their career.

“This is what I think people don’t understand: that the first five years of my career, I almost felt like I was a woman, at times, dressing up in male clothing,” they explained.

“It didn’t feel like I was regressing in any way. I just felt like I was trying new things out.”

Smith went on to say that after a while, they started to feel trapped with their masc-centred style.

“Like, ‘Oh, wow, people think this is who I am and what I’ve always been. And so if I change this now and go a bit more experimental with my clothes, it’s gonna ruin this brand that’s been created,’ you know? So that was weighing on my shoulders for a few years,” they explained.

Towards the end of their interview, the young talent opened up about their upcoming music – which they described as “emotionally, spiritually, and sexually liberated.”

“I’m really excited to go into these rooms and – and, and, and – show people that I’ve come out of this, all of this, OK. And happy. And really quite excited about the rest of my life with… with me,” they added.
